![]() ![]() It shouldnt be an essential part of the track, just ambience (obviously this is a taste thing, but I think focusing on the track itself is more important) so dont spend a million years tweaking it right from the getgo. A lot of lofi producers like to use that record player crackling ambience thing, its fine I like it too but be sure to make your track sound good without it and layer it on top as a bonus. If you want some jazzy and loungy samples I´d just try to get some of it from youtube, there are a lot of Miles Davis works you could sample from. A simple sinewave with an envelope and some reverb can make for a great lead instrument, lofi is build on simplicity so dont overdo it on effects and distortion. When it comes to designing your sound with synths, try to stay away from extremely harsh tones (saw and square that are not lowpass filtered, very high frequencys, lots of overdrive and distortion etc.). Can bring out a lot of characteristics of an lot of instruments, especially drums. Just try it out, dont let it sit on 100% depth all the time, try different amounts. OTT is a very popular up/down compressor. Zynaddsub and Helm are very good tho, if you cant get the old surge to work I´d use them. If you need a synth that can basicly do anything try Surge you´ll need to get one of the older releases because they shut down vst2 support with the new update, but its the best free synth out ther imo, even better than zynaddsub or helm.
